How to Build a Balcony Garden on a Shoestring Budget

A common misconception about gardening is that it requires a big backyard and a lot of money. That’s why a lot of people, namely city dwellers on a tight budget, shy away from growing their own food. If you’re one of them, we have good news for you:

You can certainly grow your own food with a teeny-tiny balcony (or indoor space near a window) and only a few dollars in your bank account!

How?

Containers. All you need is a bunch of containers. It’s entirely possible to grow all kinds of herbs, fruits, and vegetables in all kinds of large and small pots, window boxes, hanging baskets, or used rain boots.

Yes, used rain boots. You don’t need a typical pot; you can use pretty much anything as a container!

Affordable upcycled container ideas

There’s no need to drop $25 on a fancy ceramic pot when you can dig around your garage or a thrift store. There are so many different things you can upcycle into a container for your balcony or window garden. Here are some fun, practical, and ridiculously cheap ideas:

Mason jars

Mason jars are a very versatile type of container for herbs.

You can place them indoors by a window, hang them from a window sill, put them on an outdoor table top, adorn them on a balcony railing, or set them on the ground. You just have to make sure they’re in direct sunlight for the most part of the day.

If you don’t have any Mason jars (or empty pasta sauce jars) lying around your house, you can look for some at a thrift store or, as a last resort, buy a dozen of brand-new Mason jars for under $20 at Walmart, King Soopers, Safeway, or Amazon.

Pallets

Pallets are a great container for herbs, lettuce, or strawberries because they let you save a lot of space and money! You can pick up some good pallets behind a department store, grocery store, or pretty much any type of business that orders a lot of inventory on a regular basis. Be sure to check with the manager or owner first; they’d be likely to let you haul away the pallets for free just so they won’t have to pay a company to do it. You can also check Craigslist for free pallets.

Once you get your hands on a pallet, you have to make sure it’s not made of pressure-treated lumber. You don’t want toxic chemicals to leach into the soil and ruin your plants. Look at the cut end of the pallet. If there’s a green tinge, then it’s probably pressure-treated. If there’s no green tinge, you still have to make sure it’s definitely not pressure-treated. It’s better to be safe than sorry, after all! So go ahead and cut a small piece of the pallet. If the inside is yellow or white, then it’s probably not pressure-treated. Tin or plastic buckets

You can use paint cans, empty coffee cans, sand buckets, or anything else you can find at the dollar store or around your house. You just have to remember to punch drainage holes in the bottom of each bucket.

Things to consider before getting a container

Before you let your imagination go wild and repurpose something into a container, take a look at the following list of important things to consider. It’ll help you choose the best container for the type of plant you want to grow.

* Size: When it comes to growing herbs, fruits, or vegetables, bigger is always better. The larger the container, the more likely the crop will come out all right. If the container’s too small, your crop will become root-bound and die. Note that most vegetables require a container that’s larger than 5 gallons.

* Weight: If you choose to use a tall container, you have to make sure it has enough weight in the bottom so it won’t fall over. If you intend to move the container around frequently, it’d be best to go with a lightweight container made from synthetic materials (such as a sand bucket or a plastic drum).

* Material: While most materials are safe to use, it’d still be wise to choose one that would suit your needs the best. Here’s a list of acceptable materials to use and how each one will benefit you.

-       Plastic: With plastic, soil will not dry out as quickly as with other materials. Also, plastic containers are easy to move around, even after you plant in them.

-       Ceramic: Ceramic pots are usually frost-resistant and will last for years. They also look nice and will pretty up your balcony. However, ceramic pots will make soil dry out quickly, so it’d be wise to line them with plastic sheets. You might be able to score a few ceramic pots for pennies on the dollar at a thrift store.

-       Stone/concrete: If you’re worried about someone stealing your plants, you should invest in a stone or concrete pot. Those bad boys are extremely heavy, highly durable, and frost resistant.

-       Untreated wood: This is a highly versatile material, because it can contain any type of plant. However, soil will dry out quickly, so be sure to line the inner walls of a wooden container with a plastic sheet, or just water the plant often.

-       Metal: While this is an acceptable material to use in a container, it doesn’t do so well in extreme weather. Metal containers heat up quickly in hot weather and fail to provide adequate insulation in cold weather. If you must use metal containers in extreme weather, line them with plastic sheets or bubble wrap or just bring the containers inside when the weather gets too bad. Otherwise, only use metal containers in areas where the climate is generally mild.

-       Fiberglass: This inexpensive material is ideal for balconies because it’s lightweight and can be moved around a lot. Also, fiberglass containers are weatherproof, but they don’t last a long time because they’re fragile.

Designing your balcony garden

Before starting your balcony garden, ask yourself the following questions to determine which fruits, vegetables, or herbs would fare best on your balcony:

* What type of microclimate exists on your balcony? Is your balcony exposed to wind, cold, and sometimes frost?

* What direction does your balcony face? If your balcony faces west, your plants will get plenty of sun in the afternoon and evening, and they’ll be shielded from the northeast winds. Plants in east-facing balconies are often subjected to frost and the abrupt change in temperature due to the sunrise in the morning. North and south facing balconies get sunlight for the most part of the day, and north-facing balconies get some wind.

* Is your balcony sheltered from the wind? Is there a screen or a wall that can protect your plants from the wind?

Take those questions into consideration and determine the best types of fruits, vegetables, herbs, or other plants for you to grow on your balcony.

Next, grab a sketchbook and plan different options. Be sure to get the measurements right. Figure out which types of containers would fit in your space in the best way possible.

Once you have everything planned out, get the containers you need, start planting, and watch your balcony garden flourish in no time!

Ronald Cutrone, the late friend, had died in his home in Lake Peekskill.

According to reports, he had been an artist, which had made his home desirable not only to common thieves, but apparently to so called friends, too. After realizing Cutrone was dead, Mendez took some artworks. When the police finally learned the truth, Mendez got arrested and charged with petty larceny. Reports from the toxicology tests state that Cutrone’s death wasn’t suspicious, but there’s still no lead on the cause of the man’s death.

Who knows, maybe they’ll figure it out after another five months of investigations…

According to reports, the Agency has around 500 new interns each year, but this year’s recruitment has set the media on alert.

According to the Agency, they are looking for brave young people who are interested in writing, journalism, media, 3D animations, TV and motion picture production. Allegedly the interns’ job is to promote timely and accurate info about the company’s future missions and previous accomplishments. However, reports state that their High School Work Study Program is hiring 15 year olds for numerous job positions on various experience levels. Allegedly, the kids get from 20 to 25 working hours a week, salary and other benefits. And the interns also get the chance to become full-time employees at NSA if they desire to do so after they graduate.

When asked about their actual job, the kids keep their mouths shut. While admitting they can’t say much, they state they have full access to unbelievable information. The next generation of Spy Kids is here.

If you are planning to visit China, you may want to avoid dining at KFC restaurants in the country. According to a TV program broadcast on the China Central Television, polluted ice cubes were found at the chain. In fact, these ice cubes were 12 times dirtier than toilet water. But that’s not all – they were also 19 times higher than the standards for bacteria level in drinking water in the country.

China is the biggest market for the KFC chain but the company has already suffered decreased sales because of concerns associated with an outbreak of Avian flu a year ago. KFC has been negatively affected and the current news doesn’t improve the situation at all.

The management of KFC posted an apology to all their customers in China and made it clear that they have sent executives to check the case. A spokesman of the parent company, Yum! Brands Inc. also stated that the information would be investigated and defined the case as an “isolated” incident.

A brain surgeon from Italy had an angina attack while he was conducting a difficult brain surgery. Despite the serious health problem, the doctor refused to stop the surgery because to do so would involve a great risk for the patient.

Doctor Claudio Vitale, aged 59, started feeling pains in his chest during an operation to remove a tumour.

The situation worsened and his colleagues urged him to stop the surgical procedure, but he firmly refused. The doctor agreed to blood tests, which confirmed an angina attack. However, even though the doctor himself needed immediate care and treatment, he continued the operation he was performing.

As soon as the surgery was complete, Dr Vitale underwent a special procedure called angioplasty. He explained it was impossible to leave the patient and claimed he wasn’t a hero but just doing his duty. It is believed that the surgeon will be back at work after a period of recovery.

According to a new research paper published in the United States, taking pictures of everything that you deem interesting can help you remember important moments and details but it could also have the completely opposite effect.

The study, published earlier this week in the journal “Psychological Science”, presented the results of an interesting experiment.

The scientist Linda Henkel from the Fairfield University organized an experiment in which half of the participants were given instructions just to observe the exponents in a museum and take notes. The other half were to use their cameras to snap photos of the items in the exhibition. The memory of the participants was tested the very next day.

As it turned out the participants that took photographs were less accurate in their memory of details than those who were merely observing the items.

According to Henkel this is called the “photo-taking impairment effect” which is responsible for the negative impact that constantly taking photographs of important moments has on our lives. The reliance of technology to remember for us and the lack of need to remember the details ourselves could potentially make us less happy about our lives as well.

Dimitry Krioukov, a well-renowned and distinguished physicist with a Ph.D. in Physics from Old Dominion University, currently a senior research scientist at the University of California, got pulled over once for running a stop sign by a traffic police officer.

In order to avoid paying the hefty fee for purportedly forgetting to hit the brakes at the stop sign, the doctor in Physics wrote a special research paper that proved his innocence. In the paper Mr. Krioukov stated three specific reasons that misled the police officer who consequently pulled him over and gave him a ticket.

First, the cop estimated the angular and not the linear speed of Krioukov’s vehicle. Second, the car decelerated and then accelerated comparatively quick and third, there was an obvious obstruction of the police officer’s view by another moving vehicle at the exact specific moment both cars were at the stop sign.

When the judge read the detailed 4-page research paper supported with complicated graphs with formulas and figures, he dismissed the case thus Krioukov avoided paying the $400 fine.

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” – that’s the quote that inspired the 23-year-old programmer Patrick McConlogue to make a one-of-a-kind offer to a homeless stranger who was living on the streets of New York City.

McConlogue approached the 37-year-old Leo Grand in late August this year and told him he could give him a 100$ bill now or provide him with lessons in computer programming for two months. Luckily, the homeless Grand chose the second option and now almost 5 months later he is about to launch his first mobile application called “Trees for Cars”. The app itself provides easy, environmentally considered carpool solutions to its users.

The unconventional pair began meeting for an hour a day and conducted the lessons outdoors near Chelsea Piers where Grand liked to sleep. McConlogue provided his new pupil with a used Chromebook personal laptop and a couple of coding text books.

Eventually, as the weather became colder McConlogue received an unexpected support by his boss who was also the founder of Princeton Review, John Katzman. He allowed both of them to work full time on their mobile app and use the equipment in the New York’s office of the search engine company “Noodle”.

After 5 months of hard learning, dedication and a few thousand lines of code, Leo Grand now enjoys the fruit of his labor. The project won thousands of supporters and the app is now live on the app stores as well as for android users. Grand is now inspired that his future is brighter than before and he hopes that thanks to his new skills he will be able to secure a job as a computer programmer.

Official reports state that 29 year old Amanda Engle was caught spitting on a police officer’s pizza at a Pizza Hut in Tennessee.

Frank Rogers had arrested Engle nine months previously after the woman had allowed a drunk driver to drive her vehicle. During her hearing, she admitted to also being under the influence of alcohol herself. She spent two days in jail and had to pay a fine for her actions. The following January, Engle decided to take revenge on Rogers by spitting on the pizza he ordered at the Pizza Hut where she was working. After the man saw Engle, he asked if she knew him and she replied to him using his name.

Engle was fined $500 for spitting on the pizza and her mug shot was splashed across local news. She also lost her job as a manager at Pizza Hut.

Some reports state that Farrar is accused of hiding his daughter from the authorities, since officials have been trying to get custody of the girl after labelling her parents unfit to care for a child. One thing is for sure – the girl still remains missing.

According to recent reports, a primary school near Slough, Berkshire suspended a 6 year old from all school classes for four days. 6 year old Riley Pearson apparently did something completely unforgivable by bringing Mini Cheddars into school for lunch. According to the school’s headmaster, Riley has violated the school’s lunch policy several times by bringing the snack in his lunchbox. The school insists that all students follow a strict healthy eating policy, which is against all kinds of sweets, fizzy drinks, chips and chocolates. After being called to the principal’s office, Riley’s parents defended the boy, claiming that he was underweight and in need of carbohydrates and fats.

Riley’s parents said their son usually has a cheese snack, a yoghurt tube, a sandwich, a bottle of water and Mini Cheddars in his lunchbox. However, it seems like the school’s headmaster doesn’t think this type of lunch is appropriate.

However, that didn’t stop the woman. Furthermore, she even told the media that she eats up to 15 containers of eye shadow a day! In other words, she has devoured around 10,000 containers in her life!She admitted that she prefers brown, metallic grey and white shades of eye shadow. According to her own words, for her the makeup hunger is just like an average hunger for your favorite candy.

Finally, more than 15 years after Brittoni started eating nickel, lead and arsenic on a regular basis, she’s vowing to put an end to her addiction.

After all, the guy has a song, which is entitled I Am God. Bob Erb, a lottery winner, craved for a burger and some fries, so he went to the Old West Express diner in Saskatchewan, Canada. He ended chatting with the diner’s owner, Clifford Luther, and their chat went on for hours. At some point Luther shared that his daughter, who was living in British Columbia, had recently been diagnosed with cancer. Erb, on the other hand, had been on his way to bury the ashes of his father. It’s not clear whether it was due to their shared sorrow or Erb’s kind nature, but he made a decision that day.

However, a recent study conducted by the London School of Economics’ Psychology department has shown that people who have the habit of staying up late and waking up in the mid hours of the day tend to have a higher IQ than the early birds.

Satoshi Kanazava, a doctor of Psychology, explains the results with the fact that general intelligence is a separate mental module, not necessarily linked to other mental modules such as social interaction and ability to make objective judgement, for example. The habit of going to bed early has its historical roots : our ancestors didn’t have electricity, therefore staying up late wouldn’t have been of much use to them. Luckily, the invention of electricity and technological progress have made it possible for people to use the night for work, entertainment or whatever they please.

However, being a night owl might speak for a higher intelligence but it does have its harmful effect on our health. Staying up late is often linked to emotional instability, irritability and depression as well as some cardiological illnesses.

Soon after Keren broke up with Martin, he began stalking her. She used to jump at every small noise around the house obsessing that someone might attack her by surprise. Martin used to send her over 50 text messages a day often filled with mean threats against her and their daughter.

Keren was so scared due to the constant harassment that she was forced to call the authorities and move out of her home. It wasn’t until Keren and Katie moved to another city when Martin’s abusive behavior suddenly came to an end. He had felt that he was causing too much pain to the woman he presumably loved and had a change of heart.

Finally, Keren’s fear and negative emotions began to subside after her former fiance stopped threatening her. Martin called her and asked to see his daughter. Then Keren decided to forgive her former partner and give him another chance to prove that he was not a threat to her and their child. Eventually, after a couple of months of seeing each other as friends they began to date again and their love for one another became a fact. Against the advice of her family and friends, Keren got married to her former stalker and now the happy couple lives together as a family.
